In many cases, honey can be more than one of the mentioned terms. Each term however means something different and knowing which will help you choose the healthiest honey.

In meeste gevalle kan heuning meer as een van die genoemde terme wees. Elke term beteken egter iets anders en om dit te weet, sal u help om die gesondste heuning te kies.




What is Pure Honey?                                                                                                                                                                                                        Wat is Suiwer Heuning?


Pure Honey is 100% honey, without any other ingredients, such as corn syryp, which is in many cases added to commercial honey to increase volume and to reduce cost. What is Raw Honey?                                                                                                                                                                                                        Wat is Rou Heuning?


The difference between raw honey and pure honey is that in addition to being pure, raw honey has not been heated to the point of pasteurisation (no higher than 48°C). The benefit of not heating honey is that the naturally occurring enzymes, vitamins, and minerals are preserved and you get the full benefits of them from eating raw honey.

Organic honey is produced from the pollen of organically grown plants, and without chemical miticides to treat bees. Buying organic honey ensures that you avoid contact with pesticides that may be sprayed on or near the plants visited by honeybees. “Filtering” honey means processing the honey to remove very small particles, often even as small as the pollen.

Unfiltered honey is not necessarily raw unless labelled so, but it will be closer to its state straight from the hive than honey that has been filtered. Choosing raw unfiltered honey ensures the most natural properties of the honey have been preserved. Milk & Honey Lane provide and use only Pure, Raw, and Unfiltered honey to our customers and in our baking.

Our Aloe, Blue Gum, Acacia and Bush Honey are also Organic.

Farmers will however, in general avoid the application of pesticides while their trees and crop are blooming in order to allow honeybees to pollinate the plants. Therefore our Orange, Macadamia, and Sunflower Honey are technically also organic. But because these crops can be sprayed at certain stages during their growth cycle they can not be officially classified as such.

Why does Honey vary in Color, Texture and Taste? Hoekom het Heuning verskeie Kleure, Tekstuur en Smaak?


It may have never crossed your mind, but there are as many types of honey as there are types of flowers. They can vary drastically in taste, colour and texture.
The taste, colour and texture are determined by the nectar source the bees gather from.
For example, most people are familiar with clover honey. Clover is an abundant flower that bees love to visit and gather nectar from to take back to the hive. The bees take this nectar and stir it and fan it until the water content drops and it becomes the thick syrupy goodness we love to enjoy in various ways. This is the taste that most people associate with honey. Mildly sweet with a pleasant taste.
Instead, picture a citrus tree orchid. Citrus blossoms have a very distinct smell. The smell is one of the properties of citrus flowers that makes it unique. You can imagine that honey produced primarily from citrus flowers might taste drastically different than honey produced from clover blossoms.
Colour and texture can both be dependent on the same factors.
Raw honey can vary in colour, from very dark to almost clear, depending on the floral source. Colour can also be affected by age, as honey generally gets darker with age. Another factor in honey colour is the crystallization process. Honey generally appears lighter when crystallized.
That leaves us with texture. Texture can be dependent on the floral source. Aloe vera honey tends to have a creamy consistency while citrus and macadamia are very thin and runny. This is caused by the difference in properties of the nectar source. Some have much lower water content and vary in chemical composition. That is why honey varies in taste, colour and texture. Why do you mainly prefer supplying honey in glass containers?                                                                                                                         Hoekom verkies julle om heuning in glas bottels te verkoop?


Although honey can be supplied in various types of containers like glass, plastic or metal, we mainly prefer glass containers. Taste can be affected by the container during storage. Glass containers maintain the honey's original taste. Plastic and metal containers can leach chemicals into the honey and can alter the taste over long storage periods.
However, if you prefer the plastic squeeze type bottle, we can provide it. Please contact us. Alhoewel heuning in verskillende soorte houers soos glas, plastiek of metaal gelewer kan word, verkies ons hoofsaaklik glas bottels.

How long does honey last?                                                                                                                                                                                          Hoe lank kan heuning hou?


It is said that honey is the only food that can not spoil or go off. It can certainly age and become darker in colour and over time tends to crystallise (turn into a thick, sugary paste).
However, it remains perfectly good and can be de-crystallise. See the de-crystallising process in the question below.

How do you turn crystallised honey back into its original liquid state?                                                                                                                                             Hoe kry mens gekristalliseerde heuning weer terug in die oorspronglike vloeibare vorm?


Place the crystallised honey jar in a larger container. Fill the container with boiled water to just under the brim of the honey jar. After 5 minutes, replace the cooled water with freshly boiled water. Repeat this process until the entire honey jar returned to its original colour and transparency. Please note that if the crystallised honey is in a plastic container, the process above can deform the plastic container. It is advisable to remove the crystallised honey from the plastic container if possible and place it in a glass jar before commencing with the process. This is another good reason for buying honey in glass containers. Plaas die gekristalliseerde heuning bottel in 'n groter houer.
Vul die houer met gekookte water tot net onder die rand van die heuning bottel.
Vervang die afgekoelde water na 5 minute met vars gekookte water.
Herhaal hierdie proses totdat die hele heuning bottel weer die oorspronklike kleur en deursigtigheid het.
Let daarop dat indien die gekristalliseerde heuning in 'n plastiekhouer is, kan die proses hierbo die plastiekhouer vervorm. Dit is raadsaam om die gekristalliseerde heuning eers uit die plastiek houer te haal indien moontlik en in 'n glas houer te plaas voordat u met die proses begin.
Dit is nog 'n goeie rede om heuning eder in glashouers te koop.
